Pulp cane chair and pulp cane clothes hanger / Sjoerd Vroonland
The Zuiderzee Museum has bought two objects by designer Sjoerd Vroonland from the Gone With The Wind exhibition.
The pulp cane chair is a design study in the process from craft to abstraction. The traditional plaitwork is central. But for the technique and the construction of the silhouette, Vroonland used a contemporary method: the tie-wrap. This method provides a better understanding of the design process of the chair. Within the framework of the study Vroonland plays with design experiments. The question ‘Is this a chair or a showpiece?’ plays an important part. The pulp cane clothes hanger was based on those very experiments. The plaitwork technique is also central in the traditional products of this basket weaving business, although the outcome is different.
