Traditional highlights in a new setting

Every year, the Zuiderzee Museum commissions important Dutch artists to give their vision of the collection and the Museum. With their present-day interpretations, they re-tell the story of the Zuiderzee. Domesticity displays three commissions given to designers in 2009 and 2010 in their historical context: The Poor Man’s Gold by Joost van Bleiswijk, the Zuiderzee Settings by Kiki van Eijk, and Truly Dutch by Scholten & Baijings.

Each commission reflects different elements from the historical collection of the Museum. Regardless of whether that concerns the lifestyle or domesticity of the 19th-century fishermen, VOC voyagers or the wealthy bourgeoisie, each commission shows the kinship of present-day design with traditional items from the past.

Total Table Design

In het project Total Table Design geven de Nederlandse ontwerpers Kiki van Eijk en studio Scholten & Baijings hun visie op de kunst van het tafelen vorm. Total Table Design toont tafeldamast, keramisch serviesgoed, glaswerk en bestek. Voor de realisatie van de ontwerpen hebben het Audax Textielmuseum Tilburg (tafelgoed), Royal Leerdam Crystal (glaswerk) en Koninklijke van Kempen & Begeer (bestek) de handen ineen geslagen. Alle drie Nederlandse bedrijven en instellingen hebben een traditie van ambachtelijke productie en werken geregeld samen met een keur van Nederlandse en buitenlandse ontwerpers met als doel experiment en innovatie te stimuleren. Het keramisch serviesgoed ontwikkelden de ontwerpers bij Cor Unum en in het Europees Keramisch Werkcentrum (EKWC) in Den Bosch.
