glasswork scholten & baijings
Wednesday 15 Oct 2008
The Zuiderzee Museum is now the proud owner Table Glass, the new collection created by the design duo Scholten & Baijings. The six-piece glass series was produced in collaboration with the master glassblowers of Royal Leerdam Crystal.
The Zuiderzee Museum bought the glass series during the International Glass Art Fair in Leerdam. The six user items, with the names Jug, Platter, Bowl, Platter with cover, Candy dish, and Flower vase, have been made from Europe’s purest variety of crystal, cristal supérieur. Each table object consists of a pink transparent layer and a white layer. The two layers of coloured glass have been brought together by means of the traditional glassblowing technique known as ‘overlay’. After cooling, the characteristic line patterns of this series were applied manually with a small diamond disk. The new acquisitions will be on show in the Zuiderzee Museum from 3 November 2008 onward.
Scholten & Baijings The young designers Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings have been working together since 2000. In their designs they make use of grids, colour, transparencies and layers. The designs are the result of their own specific way of working in which they investigate craftsmanship and tradition. Innovative products are generated by combining these with creativity and talent. The work of Scholten & Baijings is characterized by minimal design and a refined eye for detail. Earlier this year, the Zuiderzee Museum purchased the collection entitled Woven Willow, Conversation pieces for the table. This collection was inspired by the age-old craft of wickerwork.
