It stood on a little island encircled by ditches and was called Siberia; a nearby row of houses was called Moscow. This was because the houses were so far from the rest of the built-up area. After all, Siberia and Moscow were also quite far away.
Since Marken was flooded a couple of times a year, the houses were built on piles. Sometimes the chicken coops and rabbit hutches around the house had to be rebuilt after a flood. The animals were rescued, of course, before the water got that high.
