This sub-post-office comes from Den Oever. The interior of Trijntje Kaan has been installed in the left-hand house, while a reconstruction of the sub-post-office, dating from around 1920, has been installed in the right-hand part.
A sub-post-office can best be compared to a postal agency. The first postage stamp was printed on 1 January 1582.
Nowadays, more post offices are vanishing than are being set up. Sub post offices are also declining. The fax, e-mail and smartphone are replacing paper communications. At the beginning of the previous century, however, this was quite different. In 1900, the flow of postal traffic amounted to around 100 million letters, 56 million postcards, 157 million printed items and more than 5 million postal packages.
