Accessibility
Everyone is welcome at the Zuiderzee Museum, and we work hard to make the museum as accessible as possible for all visitors. Click on the sections below for more information about accessibility in and around the museum, including how to get here, adapted facilities and assistance.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please email our customer service at klantenservice@zuiderzeemuseum.nl.
The Zuiderzee Museum is accessible by car and public transport. Parking options vary by season. The museum comprises the Treasure House and the Zuiderzee Village. There are three entrances: the entrance pavilion, from where you can take the ferry to the Zuiderzee Village, the town entrance to the Zuiderzee Village, and the entrance to the Treasure House. View the map here. Read on to find the relevant information for your mode of transport.
By car
Follow the ANWB signposts for the Zuiderzee Museum around Enkhuizen, which will guide you to our entrance pavilion at Sluisweg 1 in Enkhuizen. Disabled parking spaces are available here, just 100 metres from the entrance. From the entrance pavilion, you can take the museum ferry to the Zuiderzee Village, a 15-minute trip. The ferry is level access, has wide aisles, and can accommodate five wheelchairs per crossing.
Car park in Enkhuizen
If you prefer not to take the ferry, you can park at the town entrance of the Zuiderzee Village (Noorder Wierdijk 30, Enkhuizen). Holders of a clearly displayed disabled parking permit may park anywhere in Enkhuizen city centre. No additional permit is required and you don’t need to use a parking disc in the blue zone. There is also no maximum parking time for disabled drivers.
Next to the Treasure House (Wierdijk 12) is a disabled parking space. From here, it is 150 metres to the entrance of the Treasure House.
By public transport
Take the train to Enkhuizen station and either walk to the museum or take the museum ferry across the IJsselmeer to the open-air museum, the Zuiderzee Village. The ferry departs from the jetty behind the tourist information office and takes 25 minutes to reach Zuiderzee Village. Your printed or digital e-ticket will be scanned on the ferry.
By taxi
There are no designated taxi ranks, but taxis can stop briefly outside the Treasure House (Wierdijk 12) or the Zuiderzee Village (Noorder Wierdijk 30) to drop off or pick up passengers.
From the Zuiderzee Village to the Treasure House
Have you visited the Zuiderzee Village and want to go on to the Treasure House indoor museum or the other way around? The town entrance of the Zuiderzee Village is about 200 metres from the Treasure House. Turn left as you leave the town entrance and follow the pavement along the town wall until you see the Treasure House on your right.
The museum features (wheelchair) lifts, an accessible toilet, a wheelchair route, and other facilities.
The Zuiderzee Village
The Zuiderzee Village is mostly wheelchair friendly, although its authentic streets, alleys and buildings can sometimes be tricky to navigate. You can pick up a map showing the accessible route at the ticket office or check the digital map for full details.
The Treasure House
The Treasure House of the Zuiderzee Museum is housed in a collection of historic buildings. The building’s rich history creates a special atmosphere but unfortunately means that the route cannot be made equally accessible for wheelchair users and those who are not. Inside the building, lifts (130 x 250 cm) provide access to all the exhibition halls. At several staircases, wheelchair lifts (130 x 80 cm) are available. Pick up a map at the ticket desk highlighting the wheelchair-friendly route through our permanent exhibition Sea of Stories.
Accessible toilet facilities
The museum has accessible toilets, which you can find marked on the map.
Wheelchair loan
A limited number of wheelchairs are available to borrow. Our team is happy to assist you.
Payment options
At the restaurants, museum shop, and ticket counters, mobile card readers are available, allowing them to be moved as needed.
Visitors who need assistance and cannot explore the museum independently are entitled to free entry for their companion. Please email info@zuiderzeemuseum.nl with ‘Assisted visit’ in the subject line if you wish to visit as a companion. You will receive further instructions by email on how to order your free ticket through our online ticket shop.
Only guide dogs for the visually impaired and officially trained assistance dogs on duty are allowed in the Zuiderzee Museum.
At the Treasure House, you can listen to the stories behind the Sea Full of Stories exhibition using your own phone or a museum audio device. The audio is also available as a written transcript in a booklet, and the information from the upstairs screens can be accessed on your phone.
Please note that there is currently no audio tour available within the Zuiderzee Village.
