Jacket

Chintz became incredibly popular in 1600 when the Dutch East India Company travelled to distant lands such as Indonesia to stock up on spices, passing through India on their route.
Chintz was purchased here, and this exotic fabric soon became popular among the wealthy families of the Netherlands.

This jacket is made of chintz: cotton painted or printed with multi-coloured floral motifs. Chintz fabrics were originally hand painted in India and were first brought to Europe by the Dutch East India Company in the seventeenth century. It was expensive and only wealthy women could afford chintz clothing. The material was therefore used very sparingly. Later on, chintz production also started in Europe and the elegant motifs were printed here too. This ultimately made the material affordable for everyone. This jacket was worn on festive occasions.

“Those who wore chintz garments demonstrated not only style, but also status.”
