Roerversiering van een zeemeermin

Rudder decoration in the shape of a mermaid

Decorating ships with colourful paintings and wood carvings is a timeless tradition. Zuiderzee ships were also adorned with all kinds of ornaments. Sometimes these were related to superstition, such as an “all-seeing eye” painted on the bow to ward off evil.

“The rudder indicated not only the course, but also the character.”

André Groeneveld
Conservator Zuiderzeemuseum

But wooden statues were also placed on the bow or on top of the rudder, such as this mermaid. A lion, dog, rooster or eagle represented strength, loyalty, vigilance and speed. Mythological statues were also used. Often, the decoration was primarily a status symbol that expressed wealth.
