Cookies

To operate our site we use a number of different cookies which can only be used with your specific consent. We consider it important that you can control your own online privacy. For this reason we aim to inform you as fully as possible about what cookies we use and for what purposes.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small data file that is stored on your computer or mobile device by a website when you visit it. This data file stores the information you provide us with. It only records your online preferences and specific interests on the basis of your repeat visits, for example whether you prefer to read the site in small or big letters. A cookie does not store any personally identifiable information about you as a user of our site, such as your name, address or age.
Cookies can never be used to read private data on your computer or to intercept passwords. Nor can they infect your computer with a virus. They are perfectly safe and have been used since the 90s by practically all websites in the world without any major incidents. Cookies can be set by ourselves as well as by other parties.

Different kinds of cookies

We distinguish between functional and non-functional cookies. We always set functional cookies, as these are vital for a proper operation of the website. They ensure, for example, that you can remain logged in to the website if so desired. In addition to functional cookies we also set standard analytical cookies. These are in fact non-functional cookies, as they are not essential for a proper functioning of this website. They tell us, among other things, which sections of the website are popular and where we can improve our website. For example, we use cookies to show online surveys on our website, to test improvements on our site, show social media buttons or relevant advertisements for our services on other websites.

Online privacy

We feel that it is important that you can control your own online privacy. For this reason we aim to inform you as fully as possible about what cookies we use and for what purposes. In the overview below you can check which cookies are routinely set when you visit our site and which we set if you accept our cookies. Obviously, you are always free to decline.

  1. Functional cookies
Necessary cookies: to enable you to move around the site, we sometimes use cookies. They tailor our website to your individual preferences. These cookies do not require specific permission from the Government or any other authority.

  2. Cookies for the benefit of our own website statistics.
Zuiderzee Museum also uses cookies to analyze how often and how long our website is visited, with a view to improving it and making it faster.

  3. Cookies via Google Analytics
The American company Google sets a cookie on our website as part of the Analytics service, a tool to measure and analyze web traffic. We use this service to keep up to date and compile reports as to how visitors use our website, and to help us improve the site and make it faster. Google can provide third parties with this information if there is a legal commitment to do so, or insofar as third parties gather this information on behalf of Google. We do in no way control this. The information collected by Google is in an anonymous form as much as possible. We never supply Google with any of your personally identifiable data provided to us such as name and email address.
For further information about what Google can do with the data collected, we refer to the privacy statement of Google. Please note that this statement is liable to change on a regular basis.

  4. Cookies from external parties such as Twitter and Facebook, and cookies for online advertising.
The Zuiderzee Museum website carries embedded 'share buttons' to enable the promotion of specific website pages (liking) or sharing (tweeting) on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. These buttons work by means of codes installed by Facebook or Twitter and these codes set the cookies. Please bear in mind that the Zuiderzee Museum does not control the dissemination of these cookies. You should check the third party websites for further information about these. In addition we use cookies with a view to call attention to the collection and activities of the Zuiderzee Museum. These cookies are intended to obtain data, including personally identifiable data, from social profiles on media such as Facebook and Twitter. As we are not responsible for the privacy policies of Facebookand Twitter, including cookies, we advise you to revise them in order to find out what they do with the data processed through cookies. The information they collect is anonymized as much as possible. Disabling cookies only has implications for the computer and browser on which you carry out this action. If you use several computers and/or browsers you need to repeat this action as often as is necessary.

How to block and delete cookies

If you wish to restrict or block cookies which are set by us on our website, you can do so through the cookie statement that is shown on your first visit to our website. If you accepted our cookies on a previous visit, you will not be shown this statement again and you should first delete our cookies.

Please be aware that disabling or restricting cookies on the Zuiderzee Museum website may affect your experience of the site where the functionality is controlled by the use of cookies. Should you be presented with cookies on our website that we have not mentioned above, please let us know via privacy@zuiderzeemuseum.nl.
