In the silence of the deep water cellar

For the Zuiderzee Museum, Nynke Koster created a work of art in the courtyard of the Treasure House, inspired by the 18th-century water cellars hidden beneath it. These cellars, built in 1755, were used to collect and store rainwater—in an era without drinking water pipes, that was the cleanest source of water. Koster made a cast of the brick walls in the cellar and translated this into a contemporary form. The color gradient and traces of the waterline have remained visible.

By sitting in the work and touching it, a hidden piece of history becomes tangible. With the help of audio, the historic water cellar comes back to life.
