Treasury

In the Treasure House's Treasury, the museum showcases recent acquisitions, highlighting the significant objects that are enriching our collection.

Since its foundation in 1948, the Zuiderzee Museum has been collecting heritage from the Zuiderzee region. The collection comprises a wide variety of objects. For example, historic buildings and ships can be seen in the Zuiderzee Village.

In the Treasure House, the story of the communities in the Zuiderzee region and their traditions is told through the collection of historical objects such as paintings, furniture, pottery, glass, drawings, photographs, traditional costume and model ships.

The museum also regularly acquires contemporary design and visual art. These objects offer a fresh perspective on the historical narratives from a modern viewpoint and demonstrate how the Zuiderzee’s past remains, or has once again become, relevant in our time.

Now on display:

Hans Herrmann (1858-1942), oil on canvas, 102 x 106,8 cm

Fisherwoman on the Dijk

Volendam, 1890. We’re standing on the Volendammer Dijk near Hotel Spaander, where the painter was staying. The woman in the foreground is wearing the traditional, colourful Volendam costume with a headscarf. The bridges on the left provided access to Hotel Spaander and the adjoining cottages at the time. On the right, we see houses at the foot of the Dijk, on the Doolhof. Nowadays, there are shops here; the painting therefore serves as a unique historical document.

Provenance: Lieveland collection. The work was previously on display at the Zuiderzee Museum from 2009–2010, during the exhibition ‘Volendam: Artists’ Village, the Heritage of Hotel Spaander’. In September 2024, Marion and Peter Kersloot donated the painting to the Zuiderzee Museum.

Georg Hering (1884-1936), oil on canvas, 130 x 150 cm

Volendam, 1918

Since 1881, Hotel Spaander in Volendam had been the main gathering place for artists such as Georg Hering. In 1912, Hering married Pauline Spaander (1887–1918), the hotel owner’s daughter. Their daughter Dorothea was born in 1915; she and her ragdoll are in the foreground of the painting.

The little green house on the left is Hering’s studio. Old fishermen would sit outside the door chatting every day. The Volendam harbour is in the background. The painting depicts a composed scene.

Provenance: Sanders Kunsthandel Leeuwarden. Donated by the grandson in memory of his parents and grandparents via ‘Geefwet Staat der Nederlanden’, 2022.
