Shabbat in Enkhuizen

Step inside this small dwelling and meet the residents (almost as if in real life). Twilight has just begun. The table is set. You are welcomed by Naatje, who is preparing the Shabbat meal with her daughter Dina, while her husband Levie and their sons Salomon and Meijer get ready to visit the synagogue.

In 1904, Levie Kornalijnslijper and Naatje van Kreveld made their home in Enkhuizen, where they welcomed three children: Salomon, Meijer and Dina. Levie initially began a business in scrap metal, rags and bones. He later opened a shop selling bicycles, bicycle parts and electrical appliances.

Visit the Zuiderzee Village for the “Shabbat in Enkhuizen” presentation and witness the Enkhuizen Jewish Kornalijnslijper family preparing for the celebration of Shabbat, the Jewish weekly day of rest, on a Friday in 1916. Father Levie has had a busy day in his bicycle workshop, and mother Naatje and daughter Dina are talking about a neighbour who was curious about ‘kosher’ food. Salomon is preparing for his Bar Mitzvah in the bedstead, as he will turn thirteen in a week. Meijer would rather be playing football, but he now fancies a slice of the butter cake Naatje has baked for after the Shabbat meal.

The museum features multiple other presentations that highlight true family histories, including those of Schokland, the home of Anna Diender, the Vis-Duyvis family from Zaandijk and the Van de Kamp family that founded the Stoomwasserij IJsselmuiden steam laundry.
