Pleated cap

In the village of Huizen, women used to have two different types of traditional headwear: the so-called cornet and the ear iron. An important part of the Sunday costume was the ear-iron undercap, on weekdays women wore a so-called isabee, which was as impressive as the Sunday version, but had a high upright frontal brim. Girls between 12 and 18 used to wear a pleated cap under their ear-iron.

“If you've got it, flaunt it.”

The dome and the pass (the transition between the dome and the lower edge) are made of embroidered tulle. The lower edge is made of Beverse bobbin lace and the finely pleated front edge is made of machine-made Beverse lace. The pleated cap was worn over a black undercap, so that the beautiful lace was clearly visible. The pleated cap was worn in this form between approximately 1900 and 1940. After that, this costume disappeared from everyday life.
